Photovoice Process

The men were supplied with cameras at the very first session with the researchers. They either used these cameras, or their cellphones to document their journey. The men were asked to take photos throughout the process of making the drums, but also at other times in between the drum making sessions to reflect on what being involved in a men’s group meant to them. After the drums were completed, the men came to a session to discuss their photographs. Seven men attended this sharing session, three of them shared their photographs but all of them became engaged in conversation. The men that were unable to attend the session, met with the research assistant to share their stories and photographs in an individual interview. The titles of the photographs were given by the man that took the pictures.  The quotes included with the photographs are either from the man that took the photo or from the discussion that happened at the sharing session. Many of the men wanted to be recognized by their birth names, their spirit names, their nicknames or a combination of all. We have honoured this by including their names, as they wanted to be recognized.
